Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an iconic personality? No matter how sincere, hardworking and diligent you are, if all your efforts and energies are not channelized in a single direction, you are less likely to become a famous personality among the masses. The aforementioned qualities can no doubt make you a successful person in life but to achieve the greatness of likes God of Cricket – Sachin Tendulkar, King of Pop – Micheal Jackson, Nightingale of India – Lata Mangeshkar, Goat footballer – Lionel Messi, etc., all that you require is laser sharp focus and putting all your energies towards attainment of your chosen goal. Remember the old saying ‘Jack of all trades but master of none’? Having knowledge and skills in diverse fields is definitely an added advantage to succeed in life but as said earlier, the chances that it will make you a famous personality are bleak.
Here we need to understand what we mean by being ‘jack of all trades’ and ‘master of a single trade’. When we say ‘jack of all trades’, we mean a person, who possesses knowledge and skills in different areas. For example, a person working as an accountant in a Bank, who can play harmonium well, has a flair for writing and is also a good player of hockey and may be some more areas where he is a good performer, can be said to be a jack of several trades. But he is not a master in any single field. This person (a Jack) has horizontally expanded his knowledge base and acquired skills in diverse fields. On the other hand, a singer who is adept in singing, can appreciate poetry, has the ability to play some musical instruments, and is also well acquainted with the various forms of singing i.e. classical, folk, sufi, pop, etc., will be deemed to have acquired mastery as he can face any sort of challenge thrown upon him in his chosen field i.e. singing. This person has vertically expanded his knowledge and skills.
Just imagine about persons who you admire and worship as your role models, are they not the experts of their fields? Indeed, they are, because they pursued one single profession or hobby with all their might, and renounced many pleasures of life to attain the heights they have achieved. Many of these personalities might be good at some other areas also, but the height and fame that they have attained can only be attributed to the efforts put in the main purpose of their life, that is, to excel in their chosen profession or hobby. Our great freedom fighters, cinema’s greatest artists, world’s famous players, devoted social workers, famous politicians, Nobel laureates, etc., etc., all devoted their entire life to a single cause i.e. to master one single trade and they were able to create and re-write history time and again. This is the magic of becoming a master of single trade. Thus, while becoming ‘Jack of all trades’ may make you a successful person and help you utilize your knowledge and skills in a wide range of areas, it may not work well if you have wished to become an iconic personality.
To recapitulate, think of an iconic personality and you can immediately relate to him as a master of his field, which encompasses being a jack of diverse activities in that particular or associated field and not in altogether different fields. Thus, being a ‘Master’ is great although being a ‘Jack’ is also by no means a little achievement. But, it takes toiling really and really hard to become a master. You have to be passionate, disciplined throughout and channelize all your efforts and energies in a single direction. The rewards are really worth it, though.
The famous quote of legendary Bruce Lee says it all – “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
Very well said. Being aimless is worse than having an aim and not knowing how to achieve it!
